Scientists and novices alike have gazed at the night sky for centuries and

announced that through the use of its high-performance supercomputing
technology, the answers to these and many other questions about the origins of
the Universe may be uncovered by astrophysics scientists at the Shanghai
Astronomical Observatory and the Nanjing Purple Mountain Astronomical
Observatory.
With the new SGI(R) Altix(R) systems installed in November at each observatory — Shanghai and Nanjing — scientists are exploring the theory of the structure of evolution of the Universe by running high-resolution numerical simulations of galaxy formation.

FNMOC began using SGI servers, supercomputers and storage technology in 2001. Today, the network includes two Origin 3800 machines, two Origin 3900s and two 12-processor Origin systems, which are clustered because the center’s work is continuous and the output of one job often contributes to the input of the next, Clancy said. The systems are connected through SGI’s shared-file system, called InfiniteStorage Shared Filesystem CXFS, which permits data to be passed among operating systems without any replicating.

SGI (NYSE: SGI – News) today announced preliminary financial results for the third fiscal quarter ended March 25, 2005. The Company is projecting quarterly revenue of approximately $160 million and an estimated operating loss of approximately $45 million. The projected operating loss includes restructuring charges of approximately $15 million incurred primarily in connection with the restructuring actions that were initiated in February 2005. Without these charges, the non-GAAP operating loss is expected to be approximately $30 million. In its January 25, 2005 conference call, the Company had previously forecast revenue for the third quarter in the range of $180 million to $200 million.
