SGI Oddities

Here are a few SGI items that you don't see every day..

Some of the photos were borrowed from Marcus Hebert's collection of SGI pictures.

Another thing I used to have is a full set of Indy Balls (Red, Blue & Green). Those were misplaced when we moved some time ago.

    O2 Bag

I saw this O2 bag up for auction on Ebay.

    Inflatable O2

This guy had one on auction over on Ebay.
  • Inflatable O2 - Video Option
  • Inflatable O2 - Front

    Translucent O2

  • See-Thru O2 System
This guy had it on auction over on Ebay with this description:

This is a unique collector O2 with translucent skins and the latest PMC-Sierra RM7000A CPU that runs at 350MHz.

The translucent skins were prototypes made before the original blue color was selected, there were only a few made and that was before the i-mac. The only plastic part that is not translucent is the scalp which is light grey (also a prototype) and somebody placed a "pentium III" label on there as a joke (it could be removed easily)

On the inside this computer is practically an O2+ (latest model SGI released in August 2001). It has the PMC-Sierra RM7000A 350MHz CPU with 256 L2 cache and 1MB L3 cache. The computer is loaded with the maximal 1024MB of RAM which allows up to 900Mb of allocated texture memory. The system has an Audio/Video board installed that lets you input and output analog audio or video, including with the O2 camera (included). The optional Flat Panel adapter is installed in the system, so you can hook up an 1600SW flat panel to it "without" a multilink adapter. And the system comes with two 4GB hard drives.

  • Hot Rod Onyx2
Imagine driving this baby down the highway...

    Strange Sightings on your Microprocessor

  • R4000 California License Plate - MIPS chip designers have a tendency to place California license plates on their chips. This plate was found on a MIPS (Silicon Graphics) 4000 microprocessor in revision A.
  • R4400 California License Plate - Found on a MIPS (Silicon Graphics) 4400 microprocessor used to power the WEBForce servers in the mid-1990s.
  • R10000 California License Plate - A later revision of the plate that we uncovered on a MIPS (Silicon Graphics) R10000 microprocessor.
  • R12000 California License Plate - The latest revision of the license plate that was found on early silicon from the Silicon Graphics' MIPS R12000 microprocessor.
  • Guitar-Strumming Tyrannosaurus Rex - This jukin' dinosaur was found next to the mask design credits on the Silicon Graphics MIPS R12000 microprocessor.
  • Nikki, the Chow Chow - A wireframe Chow Chow dog named Nikki that we found on the Silicon Graphics MIPS R4000 microprocessor. This graphic image was placed on the chip by Nikki's owner, chip designer Larry Johnson.
  • Supersonicous Siliconous - This speedy roadrunner almost crashed into us when we were trying to photograph a MIPS-core RISC microprocessor.
